Abercrombie, Ige to face off at AARP debate in Kona
AARP Hawaii is sponsoring a debate between Gov. Neil Abercrombie and state Sen. David Ige from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. This forum is the only remaining debate on AARP’s voter education schedule before the primary election Aug. 9.
The debate will focus on issues of importance to older voters and their families – including health care, retirement security, jobs, support for family caregiving, and long-term care. The format will allow candidates to question one another directly; some questions will also be taken from the audience. The debate will be moderated by University of Hawaii associate professor of journalism Gerald Kato.
The debate will be featured in the second half of a two-part event that begins with a discussion of the future of Social Security and an update on AARP’s state legislative priorities. That discussion is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The debate is from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Sale benefits victims of apartment fire
Kona Elks Lodge 2616 in conjunction with the families of the apartment fire in June will host a charity fundraiser garage sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. All saleable donations are welcomed and can be dropped off ahead of time at the Kona Elks Club or by calling Beth at 334-0551 or Muriel Boot at 987-8412. The proceeds from the garage sale will go directly to the families who were displaced by the fire on Kealapua Street )in June. Admission and parking is free. There will also be tamales and massages for sale.

Cancer support group meeting Tuesday
A cancer support group meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Teshima’s Restaurant in Honalo. People newly diagnosed with cancer, cancer survivors, caregivers and family members are welcome.
